Houston between Clinton and Suffolk Streets. A reception for the artist will be held on September 4 from 6 to 9pm at the boutique.
In an era of instant media gratification, the illustrative arts fulfill a purpose of storytelling. It is this effect that carries Goldin’s show of fashion plates called Jeunes Gens aux Défilés (Young People at the Fashion Shows). Storytelling through an illustrative means allows us to bypass the complexities of written language. In presenting her subjects as would-be theatrical characters, Goldin is codifying archetypes of Parisian and New York street fashion. This creates visual evidence that, when coupled with the oral history of subcultures, recalls the original functions of the story as a culturally normative agent. This anthropologic understanding of storytelling means that her fashion plates act as kind of census record. She is creating a record of “the present” with the anticipation that for the remainder of its life, it will be viewed as “the past”.
