Mataharis - Mucho Mas than I expected

Yesterday was the last day of the Spanish Cinema Now at Walter Reade. Every year we get treated to new work coming out of Spain. This year I managed to check out "Chaotica Ana", the new film from Julio Medem. One of my favorite directors (Sex y Lucia, Lovers of the Artic Circle), I was very dissapointed. I actually considered walking out of the end. It was completely over the top, a total cliche. "Doghead" by Santi Amodeo was much more interesting, a story of a an 18yr old suffering from a rare neurological order (I'm always a sucker for these types of movies). It was both funny, depressing, and visually unique. Lastly, yesterday I made it to see Mataharis...it was supposed to be good (said Aunt Maura from Spain) and it also starred spanish-euskedi actress/singer Nawja Nimri. The female directed film (Iciar Bollain) took us into the world of 3 female private detectives. It sounds a bit silly but it was more a film about spying and betrayal and the dillemma of scruples versus ambition. Overall much better than I expected to be and worth going all the way uptown to Lincoln Center (what a pain in the arse!) Nawja was great as were the other actresses. I just happen to be a bit obsessed with Nawja. In the late 90's she put out a very Tricky-esque record. She is beautiful in an off the beaten track type of way and typically she has good style. In the original "Abre Los Ojos" she plays the crazy girl that runs the the lead characters car off the rode. Remember the terrible job Cameron Diaz did in the american version???? Anyway, try to check out Mataharis if it ever comes out on NetFlix (doubtful).

Some pics of my girl Nawja:

NYE is right around the corner

so aside of figuring out what to wear, we've also started to think what to do.....here are a few options

DJ Prince Paul at the Delancey. New Years Eve Bash with with Hors D'oeuvres and Champagne Toast at 12am! I don't know what better DJ you're going to see. Think De La Soul Three Feet High and Rising. Plus the Delancey is right around the corner so if the bathroom line is long I'll just go to my house. 15.00 at ticketweb.com

Studio B presents Studio B New Year's Eve Celebration featuring Slick Rick the Ruler, Moby, Frankie Bones , Kudu, Holy Ghost!, Jacques Renault, The Bangers, -Not as much for Slick Rick but I wouldn't mind going to see KUDU. However Studio B is a hike on NYE when there are no cabs. Better to BMX it over there.

Download Shelly's Lolita Mix

Lolita Party Mix for Lola Y Maria Dec 2007
mixed by Shelly (White Dove NYC  / Death By DJ )

1. Berlin "Sex (I'm A...) Terri original 12"
2. 2rumwohnung / Moguai "Sex Secret" (Moguai Remix)
3. Madonna "Burning Up" original 12"
4. Klymaxx "Mutli-Purpose Girl" original 12"
5. Sheena Easton "Sugar Walls" from the album A Private Heaven*
6. Peaches "Boys Wanna Be Her" (Weird Science Remix) 12"
7. Death From Above "Sexy Results" MSTRKRFT remix
8. Vainty 6 "Nasty Girl"
9. Prince "Darling Nikki" from the album Purple Rain*
10. MIA "10 Dollar" 12"
11. Cindy Lauper "She Bop" from the album She's So Unusual*

Lola y Maria , asked Shelly to make a mix for our 3rd anniversary party on Dec 12th! The music we picked was based on the party's theme Lolita - a sexually precocious young girl.  The music is sexy, cute, fun, girly and fun.... One source I looked at was The Filthy Fifteen  list- tracks with (*) - created by the Parents Music Resource Center (Tipper Gore) - this was an attempt to warn parents of rock n' roll's sexually explicit lyrics. This list actually boosted the artist's sales if their track was selected. I dug through my record bins and found many of the original vinyl.....Enjoy!

Download Here
Just Click on the Mp3 file -ps, it's about 28mb so please do be patient!

Mr. Dewey Cox

Photobucket
Went to special screening of Walk Hard, it was funny and made obvious jokes fresh but not as good as Superbad. I have admit I love John C. Reilly from the Boogie Nights days and its good for some laughs as well as a mild test to your musical knowledge.

Special Exhibition- blog.mode: addressing fashion

The Met will be having an exhibit at the Costume Institute Dept.

December 18, 2007–April 13, 2008

As a living art form, fashion is open to multiple readings. A vibrant reflection of contemporary culture, fashion—especially in its most avant-garde expressions—affects us through its intense visual impact. blog.mode: addressing fashion will be the first in a series of shows designed to promote critical and creative dialogues about fashion. The exhibition will present some 40 costumes and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present—all recent Metropolitan Museum acquisitions—and will invite visitors to share their reactions via a blog that can be accessed from the "Special Exhibitions" page of the Museum's website or from a "blogbar" of computer terminals in the exhibition galleries. Over the duration of the exhibition, individual costumes and accessories will be posted on the blog periodically with commentary from the Costume Institute curators and, where relevant, from contemporary designers. (from the met)

Harold Koda, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, explains, “While painting and sculpture can sometimes seem to be at an intimidating conceptual remove, fashion is so familiar, so ubiquitous to our experience that it is inherently and immediately accessible.

Diplo and Apes at MIA Philly Show

I forgot to post this picture last week. It's really funny. It's our girl April with Diplo after SHE got him into the VIP section at MIA. We were all curious why he was even there considering we thought he had a falling out with homegirl MIA, which just for the record is totally worth seeing LIVE. Anyway, apparentely shortly after this picture was taken DIPLO got in a fight with someone and got kicked out.
