The Goethe-Institut New York and Anthology Film Archives continue their ongoing collaboration with one movie every month selected from the Goethe-Institut’s film archive. This fall’s selection comprises three documentary portraits of artists, each working in a different medium, including the NYC premiere of Heiko Kalmbach’s If One Thing Matters--A Film about Wolfgang Tillmans, which the filmmaker will present in person.

If One Thing Matters--A Film about Wolfgang Tillmans. 2008. Directed by Heiko Kalmbach. 72 minutes. Wolfgang Tillmans is one of the best-known and most popular photographers in the world. He became famous in the early 1990s with apparently spontaneous images from the club and party scene, but he was soon regarded as more than just a chronicler of the techno generation. In 2000, he was the first photographer and the first foreigner to receive Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize. Kalmbach followed Tillmans at work for four years, creating a portrait based on observation and interviews with the artist, rather than expert testimonials. If One Thing Matters conveys a vibrant impression of what drives Tillmans, and of how he negotiates the global art scene without losing his sensitivity to the experiences of everyday life.
