The Goethe-Institut New York and Anthology Film Archives continue their ongoing collaboration with one movie every month selected from the Goethe-Institut’s film archive. This fall’s selection comprises three documentary portraits of artists, each working in a different medium, including the NYC premiere of Heiko Kalmbach’s If One Thing Matters--A Film about Wolfgang Tillmans, which the filmmaker will present in person.
If One Thing Matters--A Film about Wolfgang Tillmans. 2008. Directed by Heiko Kalmbach. 72 minutes. Wolfgang Tillmans is one of the best-known and most popular photographers in the world. He became famous in the early 1990s with apparently spontaneous images from the club and party scene, but he was soon regarded as more than just a chronicler of the techno generation. In 2000, he was the first photographer and the first foreigner to receive Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize. Kalmbach followed Tillmans at work for four years, creating a portrait based on observation and interviews with the artist, rather than expert testimonials. If One Thing Matters conveys a vibrant impression of what drives Tillmans, and of how he negotiates the global art scene without losing his sensitivity to the experiences of everyday life.

Dutch artist Joost Conijn's video installation Siddieqa, Firdaus, Abdallah, Soelayman, Moestafa, Hawwa and Dzoel-Kifl (2004) features a group of seven Dutch children growing up in an atypical Islamic family on a squatted site near Amsterdam. The protagonists in Conijn's video are seemingly abandoned in the world. The carefree joyful children appear to be shipwrecked in a 21st century urban environment where they do as they please – playing, exploring, eating and sleeping without adult supervision.
Siddieqa, Firdaus, Abdallah, Soelayman, Moestafa, Hawwa and Dzoel-Kifl continues Conijn’s interest in the coexistence and chance encounters between different ethnicities and religions and argues that anti-authoritarian education is still alive somewhere at the fringes of contemporary society.
Joost Conijn was born in 1971; he lives and works in Amsterdam. In 2007 the Museum boijmans van beuningen in Rotterdam showed a larger body of works in a one person show. He recently participated in the group show Play Safe at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin.

Topshop - News - The Soho Store, NYC
I recently read an article on WWD that said" TopShop won't open until Mid-March" but on Drapers it said "A spokeswoman for Topshop confirmed to Drapers that Green ( Philip Green, Topshop’s owner) was in the US ironing out problems with contractors and said she could not yet confirm the new opening date. A source close to the situation said: "It has been difficult to negotiate with the Americans."
So, I guess there won't be a Topshop store yet in New York but at least we can shop online until the store opens.

Designer Spotlight - Erika Pena
Parsons graduate Erika Pena left Puerto Rico when she was 18 determined to make her place in the world of fashion. After working for designers like Donna Karen and Josie Natori she embarqued on creating her own line and now mixes edgy new york style with that sexy flavor you’ll only find in the beaches of the carribean. lola y maria has carried Erika Pena for a few years now, we just can't get enough....
In her Jules collection for Fall and Holiday, Erika mixes swaroksi crystals and mixed Lucite stones to form fancy jewel clusters. Notable pieces include the “Stefie” handcrafted jewel clip ons, simple but classic “Jules” earrings. And for those of you who like to wear your bling on your wrist she also did matching rings and cuffs - again also based on clusters of swaroski and Lucite stones- available in rich jewel tone hues of turquoise, black, plum and emerald. These pieces work just as well with a simple tshirt and jeans as they do with a fancy frock. It reminds me of Chanel and Lacroix jewelry from the 1980's.

Simone Collection
Another of our favorite new collections from EP is the Simone collection. These pieces look part vintage, part mosaic. I gasped when I saw the green olga ring. I had no idea what I was going to wear it with but I knew I had to have it. These pieces are comprised of semi-precious based stones chained into twos and threes....we scooped up the rings, a few necklaces and a few versions of a headband!
Here are a few examples, really best to come to the shop and see them in person.
One of favorite fashionistas, KELIS, wearing Pena's OLGA ring.
Human League - Being Boiled
for those of you who don't know, The Human League were an English synthpop band, formed in Sheffield in 1977, most known for "Don't you want me baby?". Don't get me wrong I love that song but they had some even greater ones like this. We saw them at Spain's Benicasim festival in 2007 and they were off the hook
