Shopping Spanish Style
To much dismay, one of our favorite shops in Madrid, THE DELI ROOM is closing their doors after 7 years. It’s a real shame considering it was one of the first shops in Spain to promote young Spanish designers like Miriam Ocariz, Ailanto, Josep Font, Mireya Ruiz, etc. Due to close August 1st (the space is being taken over by Basque label Loreak Mendian) We are so sad! The store was currently having a super sale (although there wasn’t much left). I said my goodbyes to this cool shop decorated like a delicatessen and walked away with an Ailanto for Naf Naf striped skirt and a load of these cool postcards printed with “Hola”, “Guapa”, “Madrid” by a graphic artist based in Barcelona.
Next Stop: Top Shop
Not at all Spanish but one of the best things about making a trip to Spain is being able to go to a Top Shop. I scoured the racks for the high waisted shorts I saw online but only a pair of super scary ones in red, size 12. The white linen ones I had seen with a tie belt were way transparent. Then finally I turned the corner and found a pair of baby blue tailored nautical shorties. I think I remember these ones online. 44 euros.
Barrio Salamanca:
Scooter. The owners must have modeled this shop on US store SCOOP…same type of labels…sparse racks, lots of neutral colored jersey, cute sandals, repetto flats, labels like Isabel Marant. Oh yeah, and the typical snotty sales girls. The only piece that really stood out was a light gold lame tshirt dress from Vanessa Bruno – on sale, 40% off 308 euro….tried it on..not very flattering…decided to think about it..
Alma Aguilar
The shop was closed for lunch. I peeked from outside…couldn’t see much…lots of pastels and super girlie…usually really nice stuff, yet pricey.
Sybilla and Jocomomola
Rebajas Grandes! The spring Parrot collection I saw online was on super sale. I was in parrot heaven….I decided to splurge and get a parrot top, maxi halter dress and even a parrot hobo. I’m hoping they will decide to sell the entire line next season (vs only the bikini collection we got this summer). Jocomomola is best known for interesting prints and bold colours.
After making a pit stop at the famous Spanish Sandwich shop Rodilla (they make those cute little triangle tea type sandwiches), we hiked up to AMACORD, Penelope Cruz’s boutique located in Barrio Salamanca. Again, total liquidation. “The store is closing” said the shop girl (perhaps a relative of Pene). The boutique carried a lot of American brands like Juicy, James Pearse, and Blue Cult. They also must have been to Coterie because they seemed to have some of the usual subjects like Manoush and even Canadian label Chulo Pony. All that seemed to be left was mostly random stuff…I did find a cool 50’s flavored black dress on sale for 78 euro (reg 250), from a French label called Mage. Au revoir, Amacord.
