Short Cuts Screening 12/4

SHORT CUTS
Robert Altman, US, 1993, 187m

“Some films can lay claim to being the best thing around in a week, a month, a year. Robert Altman’s Short Cuts is closer to being one of the all-time bests, among the finest American films since the advent of sound.” - Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

Fifteen years since its release, many lesser imitations and ensemble films have come and gone, but Short Cuts remains the standard. Based on the writings of Raymond Carver, it masterfully interweaves stories of disconnection and discontent between several L.A.-based characters: a pool cleaner dealing with the frustration of his wife’s job as a sex-phone operator, a doctor struggling with the infidelity of his wife, a philandering cop tyrannically ruling his family, and a news anchorman grappling with his wife over their child’s hospitalization. Boasting an all-star cast including Tim Robbins, Julianne Moore, Jack Lemmon, Tom Waits, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Matthew Modine, Lili Taylor, Robert Downey, Jr. and Annie Ross, among many others, the film garnered several ensemble acting awards, opened the 31st New York Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at Venice.
