It's Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, but the Situation in Which He Lives. 1970. Rosa von Praunheim. 67 minutes. In German with English subtitles. A radically critical denunciation of homosexuals who are content to fit into a gay stereotype of social superficiality and political passivity in the face of blatant discrimination, this film caused a furor in Germany. It also led to the foundation of the modern German gay liberation movement.
Thursday, June 4, 9:15 PM Fassbinder's Women. 2000. Rosa von Praunheim.
89 minutes. In German with English subtitles. Rosa interviews Fassbinder’s superstars, who reveal his sadistic methods of keeping them in line. The question arises: are there any limits to how badly a genius can treat his co-workers, friends, and lovers? Screened together with:Can I Be Your Bratwurst, Please? 1999. Rosa von Praunheim. 28 minutes. When a highly eccentric group of Hollywood cannibals need to agree on the main course for their Christmas dinner, they settle on an unsuspecting traveler played by porn star Jeff Stryker. This ‘erotic tale’ features Los Angeles underground stars as well as Rosa’s aunt, Lucy.
Friday, June, 5 7:30 PM Army of Lovers or Revolt of the Perverts. 1978. Rosa von Praunheim. 98 minutes. Print courtesy of the Reserve Film and Video Collection, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. A history of the gay liberation movement in the U.S. from the 1950s to Anita Bryant, as well as a document of gay lifestyles in the 70s. From a small revolt in a Greenwich Village bar, the rebellion swelled to become the third largest civil rights movement in America.
