The Hole is proud to present a new group of paintings by Lola Montes Schnabel. These five works, created over the period of the last year, comprise a suite of allegorically suggestive figurative paintings that use a shared five-color palette to great effect.

Each painting depicts an episode in a narrative of androgenous youth encountering each other on a remote Greek island. They depict a time of love before sexuality, with the nude youths, occasionally shrouded in sheepskins, romping playfully about the teal and tan landscape. In one work, a youth drags a dead albatross across an expanse, in another, the last in the series, the two figures come together in ecstasy, forever changing their innocent, idyllic world.

The works each begin with bleached linen and rabbit glue. Lola then engaged the surface with a five color palette reminiscent of the restrictive color schemes of the Spanish Romantics or the lucky five-color Ko-Kutani school of Japanese ceramics. Not just paint but asphalt, plaster weld, and copper plating solution are part of her toolbox, making the painting not just an assorment of emmoliated pigments, but the site of a rich alchemical reaction as the plasterweld slowly dries clear and the copper plating oxidizes and chrystallizes.

Magic, luck and intuition fill these large, confident, and very feminine tableaux. Lola graduated from Cooper Union in 2008 and has been in numerous group shows since, with both her paintings, her iodine works on paper, photographs and video work. This is her first solo painting exhibition in the United States.

Whiling we waited in line to get into the store we saw a few camels that

walked by 52nd Street.

The men's area on the 2nd floor.

People buying loads of men's clothing and accessories.

Employees undressed mannuquins for shoppers that

acted like it was Black Friday.

This woman and her mom shopped the women's room that morning.

She must have been waiting at the store almost 24 hours. Yikes!!

I wonder if any of these items went on ebay???????

Unless she was buying for all her friends plus their friends.

Are appointment to shop for the women's dept wasn't until

11:45 am eventhrough we were there at 5:20am.

Just wish that H&M advertise that the biggest size would be 10.

The Grey Scale Paintings
Walking along what seemed like an endless series of tracks my senses became accustomed to the dark labrythiniun tunnels that lay below. My eyes adjusted to the darkness and my ears acclimated to the endless series of subtle noises. Dripping water, the squeal of rats chasing each other, the release of train compressors, the clicking of the tracks as a train approached the next station, then, all at once, the roar of a passing train echoing through the tunnel, and then, silence.
This new series of works entitled “The Grey Scale” is an exploration into the context in which many of my subway works were created. Walls layered with years of tags and signatures, gravel floors covered in dust and debris, flickering lights, and the gleam of sharp steel tracks piercing the darkness are all portrayed in the context of subterranean tunnels that lead to nowhere. This is a world in which we are encouraged to stay away from the light at the end of the tunnel. These new works call to mind some of the layered complexity of Rauschenberg’s early black paintings or perhaps the subtlety of Cy Twombly’s blackboard paintings. Others yet clearly show references to the gritty urban landscapes of the New York ash can school: John Sloan, William Glackens, Robert Henri, and later most of all, Reginald Marsh. These artists chose, as I do, the streets as their primary source of inspiration. The paintings are a kind of hybrid that draws from the vocabulary of both the graffiti world and urban realism.

"SK8 ART ST" is a collaborative exhibition that will feature art work from leading names in street art such as Shepard Fairey, Risk, Norm, and skateboarding legends Chad Muska, Bam Margera, Steve Caballero, Ray Flores, Lance Mountain and Steve Olson. Suede will be turned into the vibrant streets of urban America. On display, inspired by the thriving street art scene, will be artifacts such as newspaper machines, fire hydrants and stoplight signs.

From his OBEY sticker campaign to Barack Obama’s Hope poster; Shepard Fairey has proved himself as a maverick in the street art world. What started for Fairey as a mere sticker has since evolved into an international campaign creating further popularization to the street art culture. His driving motivation is seen worldwide through murals and museums, and in this own words, “the real message behind all my work is ‘question everything’.”

Los Angeles based artist Risk, has unmistakable artist ability. His unique graffiti style has gained notoriety and paved a new way for the street art movement. Risk is a graffiti originator and has successfully crossed over to a gallery artist as well. His most current project is with Heal The Bay, he is working on a mural that covers an entire two story house.

Also on exhibition are Chad Muska, Bam Margera, Steve Caballero, Ray Flores, Lance Mountain and Steve Olson; all legends in the skateboarding community with prolific skateboarding careers. They have joined the ranks of the Sk8Art St. scene to create original pieces of artwork.

Sk8Art St. will showcase these artists’ talents in a unique and visually stimulating way. Come be inspired and enjoy an innovative atmosphere at Suede Studios, where any patron of art would find themselves at home.

HBO is promoting Season II of Boardwalk Empire with a special nostalgia train running weekends in September. Boardwalk Empire is an award-winning period drama chronicling the life and times of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), Atlantic City's undisputed political and criminal mastermind.

The train is running on the express track in Manhattan stopping at the 96, 72, and 42 St-Times Square St stations only, Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. *The cost to ride is $2.25, the same as any other train.

(NEW YORK) - P.P.O.W. and the Create Art Today (C.A.T.) initiative, founded by P.P.O.W. Director Jamie Sterns, are proud to present Soliloquy III: UV Nile, a performance by multi-disciplinary artist JOSHUA SEIDNER and art collective BLVCK AMERICA.

Organized by curator Joseph Whitt, "Soliloquy III" is the third installment in "Soliloquies," an invitational series that features collaborations between emerging and established talents in the worlds of film/video and performance art.

UV Nile is an immersive, start-stop performance that draws connections between spiritualism, exoticism, false-idolatry and themes of tribal unity in 90's rave culture. The piece casts the gallery space as a house of worship, the performer as a high priest, and each spectator as a congregant. Throughout the night, Blvck America will project multiple layers of live video and sound to isolate the most escapist elements of contemporary nightlife. In response, Joshua Seidner, prompted by constant and intermittent siren interruptions, will borrow aspects of Egyptian initiation ritual and go-go worship to offer both himself and a younger apprentice as an objectified, mummy-wrapped, father-and-son of the cloth.

All costuming will be created especially for this event by TELFAR.

Slowly transforming a secular experience into one of mystical reverence, UV Nile uncovers often overlooked connections between nihilistic artifice and holy abandon that characterize much of underground club culture.

UV Nile will begin promptly at 7pm. The performance will continue for a minimum of two hours and is open to the public.

Today I went to the exhibit and I had to wait in line to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit. I guess it because it's weekend but so worth the wait.

You are not allowed to take pictures but I did, just one. I took it with my iPod and the lens was aiming towards the mirror and I got the reflection of this black feather dress.

The exhibition celebrates the late Mr. McQueen's extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his Central Saint Martins postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation, which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded our understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. Vivienne Westwood, 1980-89 is the first exhibition to focus exclusively on Westwood’s fashions of the 1980s and highlight the significant shift in Westwood’s design style during this decade. Her work of the early 1980s was prominently featured in edgy magazines such as i-D, and her following was comprised mainly of street-style insiders. By 1985, her more structured, feminine, and historically-inspired styles began to attract the attention of the mainstream press and widened Westwood’s audience. The exhibition includes a unisex ensemble from the Pirate collection (1981), a woman’s ensemble from the influential Buffalo collection (1982) and a pair of Westwood’s iconic “Rocking Horse” boots from the Harris Tweed collection (1987). Editorial photographs from magazines such as The Face and British Vogue further illuminate Westwood’s impact on 1980s fashion, as do runway footage and video interviews with the designer.

Saw this in a Neiman Marcus catalog today and it seems perfect for a wedding (that I just realized I need a dress for). Any thoughts? I was a bit worried about the length but my guess is these pics are of some 5.11 ft model so I doubt it will be that short on me. It comes in buttermilk and black. $298

The sleeves are dreamy and I love how it looks accessorized with the necklace.

OMG - This might be the most entertaining movie I've seen all season. I can't even try to explain what this movie is about and really it's probably better I don't....

Water spurts from artificial flowers, oversized mallets crash down on unsuspecting heads, children howl with laughter—when suddenly the circus is invaded by a troop of Spanish Republican soldiers. It’s 1937, and everybody, even clowns, must choose sides. Alex de la Iglesia’s audacious new film perceptively dismantles several myths of the Civil War while recounting—with his customary outrageous humor and startling visual wit—this tale of performers forced to become historical actors. Winner of the Silver Lion at this year’s Venice Film festival, as well as Best Screenplay.
