Happy Birthday Grace!

actually belated birthday....Grace turned 60 yesterday

Pull Up To The Bumper

Driving down those city streets,
Waiting to get down,
Won’t you get your big machine,
Somewhere in this town?

Now in the parking lot garage,
You’ll find the proper place,
Just follow all the written rules,
You’ll fit into the space.

Pull up to my bumper baby,
In your long black limosine,
Pull up to my bumper baby,
And drive it in between.

Pull up, to it, don’t drive, through it,
Back it, up twice, now that, fit’s nice.

Flashback: Take it Easy - Common

I've been trying to find this for years. I can't believe it's on Youtube. I'm listening to the latest album and I thought I'd try to google it... A great way to start my Sunday morning before I head out to Fort Greene to the Flea. I got this as a free single on a tape (yes, we played tapes then) at some club in SF back in 92. Relativity was trying to promote this new guy named Common Sense. After I heard it I thought this guy is going to be huge. Amazing samples. 16 years later and he is still doing great stuff.

Brooklyn Flea

Brooklyn Flea takes place every Sunday from 10am to 5pm—rain or shine—at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on Lafayette Ave. between Clermont and Vanderbilt Ave. The Flea features 200 vendors of vintage furniture, clothing and antiques alongside new designs by local makers of everything from jewelry to textiles.

sidenote: A woman came in the shop yesterday with some amazing bags made of kente cloth..she said he was selling at the Flea today...hoping to pick up a bunch...

Sunday Best

This looks cool...don't miss June 22nd Afrika Bamabata..

Less Than Zero Screening at BAM tonight

One of my all time favorites is screening at BAM tonight

Less than Zero (1987) 98min
Mon, May 12 at 6:50, 9:15pm

Directed by Marek Kanievska
With Andrew McCarthy, Robert Downey Jr., James Spader
Based on the Ellis novel, this tragic character study follows Clay (McCarthy) as he returns from school to find his best friend Julian (Downey Jr.) hooked on cocaine and spiraling inexorably downward. Downey Jr. gives a breakout performance and Lachman captures the plastic excess of the moneyed 80s with pristine images that make the movie appear “brilliantly superficial.” (Chicago Sun-Times)

Echo and the Bunnymen Perform Ocean Rain

at Radio City Music Hall on October 1st. It's get better: with a full orchestra. I mean..have we died and gone to heaven? Public Sale starts tomorrow at 10am. It's been 20 years since I've seen them live. I've been dying just to see them perform live let alone perform what I feel is one of their best records (I played my vinyl copy to death).

From the Bunnymen's Official Website:

Echo & The Bunnymen & are proud to bring all Bunnymen fans the amazing opportunity to purchase advance tickets for Echo & The Bunnymen live at the Radio City Music Hall New York on 1st October 2008.
This is going to be a night to remember with the band performing the classic album Ocean Rain backed by an orchestra.
You have the chance to purchase tickets 1 week in advance of them being released to the general public making sure that you get the seats you want.
The performance at the Radio City Music Hall will be a welcome return for the band who sold out the venue back in Feb 1988 and are keen to repeat their previous critically acclaimed performance.
Echo & The Bunnymen’s performance at Radio City is part of the bands 30th Anniversary tour, other cities include London & Liverpool.

There are also some really amazing fan fotos posted on the site here

New Designers at Lola y Maria: Alchemy

We've just added ALCHEMY to our roster!!!!

About Alchemy:

Established in 2007, Alchemy is a specialized design firm that takes an innovative twist on old New York style, providing fresh accents for today's discerning buyer. Alchemy products are manufactured in Como, Italy, where each piece is handcrafted in the highest European fabrications.
Alchemy's new collection of unisex scarves, sashes and pochettes boasts design inspiration from 19th century iron works. This unique line features vintage keys and padlocks, shields, swords and daggers as design elements.

A classic reinvention is the use of eagles to create a hound's-tooth effect while small sparrows strategically placed create medallions. Flowers bursting out of bombs and Colt 45 pistols coupled with daisies compliment classic designs such as paisleys, mono-colored leaf patterns and baroque florals.

The current design collection displays intricate patterns that divulge hidden objects beyond initial glance to offer the consumer an interesting accessory—not just an accessory.

The yearly festival that takes place every July on the Costa Azahar is now taking their show to Madrid. Saturday, some of the Benicasim lineup will play a show in the city. Some of Madrid's Saturday acts include Siouxsie, Morrisey, and Hot Chip....Hot!

last Friday's first Friday

Cai Guo-Qiang's INOPPORTUNE: STAGE ONE was impressive and so was Shepard Fairey's DJ Set. He played a great range of classics from the late 70's to 2008: highlights included The Clash, Roxy Music, Tom Tom Club, Grandmaster Flash, early 90's Dr Dre/Snoop...we were in heaven...I only wish he would post his playlist. Oh yeah, and did we mention this was all on vinyl!

This picture from our IPHONE doesn't really do justice...check out the guggenheim's site for pics and a video documenting the installation...The exhibition ends May 24th, don't miss it. Tip: for $75 dollars you can join the Guggenheim, visit any location and you get to go to First Friday events FREE and you don't have to wait in the crazy line that goes around the block.

Cai Guo-Qiang is internationally acclaimed as an artist whose creative transgressions and cultural provocations have literally exploded the accepted parameters of art making in our time.
This is especially true of Inopportune: Stage One, Cai’s largest installation to date, which presents nine real cars in a cinematic progression that simulates a car bombing, occupying the central atrium of the Frank Lloyd Wright rotunda.

This video documents the incredible installation process of Inopportune: Stage One, which Thomas Krens, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, says "may be the best artistic transformation of the Frank Lloyd Wright space we've
ever seen."
